Crocodile Country: Photographing Crocs in Kakadu

Saltwater crocodiles are the largest living reptiles on Earth, and in Far North Queensland, they're everywhere - rivers, estuaries, and occasionally beaches. Photographing them was a fun-filled adventure with a healthy dose of caution.

River Cruises at Dusk

My favourite photo opportunity came from boat-based photography as the sun began to set. The crocs were active, making their way from food to home. From the safety of the boat, you can get surprisingly close - some individuals are so accustomed to the vessels that they barely flinch at 10 meters.

Not Quite Crocs

I was surprised by the sheer number of birds flying around. What began as a croc capturing journey quickly turned into a croc and bird photo experience. While I could pretend I knew what birds I was taking photos of, I honestly had no idea. Highlight was watching a ‘Darter’ - I believe - catching it’s dinner.

Evening to Remember

Truly a fantastic experience bobbing along the water capturing crocodiles and birds in their natural habitat.
